From the Palais Royal Ateliers is this French circa 1800 satinwood sewing box/case with a sunburst design on top with steel loop, bun feet and steel cut escutcheon but sadly no key. Inside the lid is the original fitted mirror with a white silk cord around the edges. An upper tray with precisely shaped compartments for the mother of pearl sewing tools: 2 thread winders, bodkin, gilt mount cut crystal phials for scent, needle case that is missing its tiny pansy motif, thimble, and elegant scissors with steel blades, gilt mounts and swan motif. This whole tray is lined with dove grey velvet with embroidered flowers worked in silk and two white ribbon tabs for lifting the tray out, the bottom section is lined in white silk. Rare to find these delicate and fragile tools all intact in and in excellent condition with no cracks.

During the Regency era, these work boxes were often referred to necessaries because they contained many things that were necessary to a lady. The Palais Royal items comes from the most elegant early 'shopping mall’, built in the promenades of the old Richelieu Palace that flanks the Louvre in Paris.

Condition: Two small cracks on the lid consistent with age and the needle case is missing the cartouche with pansy on it and the bodkin is missing all normal for a box that was used and over 100 hundred years old.
