French wig makers walnut wooden “blockhead” or wig last with layer upon layer of vellum on the head. Wig makers used the vellum in order to size the last for making a wig. You can still see the drawing of the widow’s peak on the vellum along with pinholes from stabilizing the wig. There is a center hole on the bottom for placing on a stand in order to elevate for longer wigs. In the 18th century these forms were called “blockheads” and were used to both make and maintain wigs.

FUN FACT

Benjamin Franklin was known not to wear wigs due to the fact a wig maker could not fit his head because it was so large!
