Description: A pair of 18th century hand carved Italian giltwood Neoclassical candlesticks with original gesso and gilding, circa 1770- 1800. These were made for a church so the backsides of these candlesticks were left unadorned in order for the church to save money. These are unique in the fact that the backside of one candlestick has carved leaves and the other doesn’t. These candlesticks are decorated as an urn with lobes and acanthus leaves, tin drip plate with leaves and pricket for the candle, a hard to find smaller size. Giltwood is wood that has gold leaf or gold paint applied to it, a process known as gilding. Most gold leaf should be at least 23 karats, mixed with small amounts of copper and silver.

Condition: They have weathered patina, age, old woodworm holes, old repairs and losses as expected from an item several hundreds of years old. Structurally sound and solid.
