French, c.1800 – 1830, flat sewing case made from wood covered in very thin blue leather with a thin gold embossed decorative line with a catch and push button for opening/closing. Inside reveals an arrangement of the interior fittings and tools: scissors, bodkin with ear scoop, needle case, stiletto and thimble laying among blue velvet. All are original and in mint condition, the blades on the scissors are steel as well on the stiletto point, typical. The tools are sterling silver with maker marks on the needle case, hard to read, in an Empire style so typical of the period and French design. The top inside interior is lined with white silk with the Name: Alagerbedor, 86 Rue de Rivoli, Paris. This is the person who sold the case not the maker.

Note: Identical examples can be found in the book “An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools” by Gay Ann Rogers, page 47.

Condition: Slight tarnish to the sewing tools and can be cleaned, the silk hinge/catch is splitting and there is rub to the outside edges/corners of the case.
