Description: English 16th century iron bodkin with ear spoon and unusual long length 5 1/2” made from heavy iron metal with decorative hatching and the initials FL. A bodkin is a needle like tool that was used for pulling tape or ribbon through a series of loops. Until fastenings were developed clothing was often joined by ribbons or leather straps. Bodkins were personal and often carried on the person, and passed through the generations. The scoop part at the end was to take wax from the ear to wax the cord or cotton that the person was using, waterproofed it and made easier to pull through cloth. Weighs: 13.1 grams

"By the 17th and 18th centuries bodkins were much shorter, 3”, and usually made from sterling silver. Typically found in a lady’s sewing case since they would use the ear spoon to take out earwax and then run their thread through the wax. The wax kept the threads from tangling and knotting. "
