An English 18th century mahogany George III library chair with a serpentine back above shaped set back arms. The legs are square and splayed in the back supported with an H-shaped stretcher with fretwork and scroll detail on the front two legs. Newly upholstered in tomato red silk velvet, the seat has horsehair interior, brass nail heads, circa 1765. Sometimes referred to as Gainsborough chairs, as they resembled the low open armchairs frequently used in the 18th century paintings by Thomas Gainsborough.
